SSHS alumnus completes NOLS course in Baja

Walker Hammond, a 2006 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, completed a three-month course in the Mexican wilderness last year with the National Outdoor Leadership School.

From Sept. 12 to Nov. 28, 2007, according to a NOLS statement, Hammond participated in an expedition-style course of 12 students and three instructors in the remote Mexican wilderness. For the first month, the group picked up their paddles and spent a month sea kayaking along the coasts and through the bays of the region. The group then learned backpacking skills and hiked through the granite and volcanic mountains along the Baja peninsula. During the final section, the course moved back onto the seas for a month of sailing a 22-foot Dascombe longboat through Baja’s warm waters.

Throughout the course, Hammond and other students perfected their navigation and travel skills, learned the value of Leave No Trace outdoor ethics and worked on their communication and leadership styles.
