Steve Green Co. is well-known around Steamboat for its delivery trucks and vans emblazoned with the company's slogan, "If it's in stock, we have it." But Steve Green's wildest delivery idea came a few years ago when he almost bought an old ambulance for the company, complete with a Starsky and Hutch-style cherry light he could throw on the roof.

"I was envisioning emergency toilet paper deliveries," Green said with a grin.

Steve Green and his company have been supplying Routt County restaurants, hotels, offices and resort properties with cleaning supplies and paper products for 35 years.

"Boring stuff no one wants to do - and we try to make it fun," said Jim Barker, the company's chief financial officer, as he balanced on an exercise ball behind his desk.

Employees keep it light-hearted in the office - Barker jokes that his CFO title actually stands for chief forklift operator. Green is adamant that having a good sense of humor is a paramount hiring consideration.

Green grew up in Detroit and moved to Steamboat after graduating from the University of Denver.

"I waited (tables) and bartended and ski-bummed - just like people do now," Green said.

"I started this company to make a living," he continued. "I was not a very good employee, so I decided to work for myself."

Whenever Green and his wife, Lorraine (the company's bookkeeper), can get away, they head to warmer climates.

"We spend most of our Januarys in Hawaii. It's one of my concessions for being here for 35 years," he said.

Although Green loves to ski, he also is an avid golfer and a budding surfer.

"At my age, it's nice to be a budding anything," he said.
