Kim White

It's hard to be in a bad mood around Kim White.

If you ever call or visit City Hall, you'll probably be greeted by the cheery White, who has worked as the city's receptionist since 1995.

"She's a good morale booster," Public Works Director Philo Shelton said. "You walk in and there's a smiling face to start your day. It's great."

White is originally from Biloxi, Miss., but don't expect much of a Southern accent. As a military brat, White was on the move with her Air Force father during a childhood that included two years in England.

"It was so cool," White said. "Just across from the school, you'd watch fighter jets take off. It was really cool."

White came to Steamboat Springs in 1988 as the single mother of two daughters in order to be closer to her own parents.

"The girls were a baby and a toddler, so it was nice to move where my parents were," she said.

White's daughters have since grown and moved on, but White intends to stay put with the community, husband and job that she loves.

"I like it," White said of her job. "I like to help people, and I really enjoy working for people. : It is a challenge because you just never know what the next person who walks through the door or calls is going to need. It's a very interesting challenge, and it's just different every day."

Deputy City Manager Wendy DuBord said White exemplifies the level of service the city chose to provide years ago when it decided against installing an automated phone system.

"She's the face and the voice of City Hall," DuBord said. "And a very pleasant one at that."
