Area fire crews responded to a fire at the Milner Landfill on Monday evening. The blaze was thought to be contained late Monday night.

Routt County Emergency Management Director Chuck Vale said the fire was burning inside a section of the dump west of Steamboat Springs off U.S. Highway 40. Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue was en route to the blaze about 9 p.m. Monday. Vale said he expected the fire to be contained relatively easily given the amount of heavy equipment such as bulldozers already on scene.

A Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighter at the Mountain Station said fire department crews never made it to the scene because Milner Landfill employees were using their own equipment to cover the fire with dirt.
