Study puts figures to quality of living
At first blush, the factors measured by the Routt County Livability Index may seem random. Charitable giving falls under the same heading as voter turnout. Traffic congestion is a page away from water quality.

Best of the Web for July 6
I am both biker and driver and each share responsibility to be safe and obey traffic laws. We have all seen bikers riding 2-3 abreast, failing to stop at stop signs, advancing to the right of stopped cars at a light (and then making a left turn) etc. We have all also seen drivers who go way too fast, don't pay attention, talk on cell phone, don't stop or roll stop at stop signs etc. I don't think we can legislate responsibility, so the best we can hope for is education and law enforcement.

Conservative commentary: Just the facts, ma'am
I don't care what network you turn on or what set of talking heads you are listening to - left, right or the imaginary center - these comments apply to all. Wouldn't it be refreshing for the host to say and enforce, "To appear on this program, you have to submit, in advance, any facts or allegations you intend to present for us to verify before you appear on our program. If you start to espouse unsubstantiated claims or other 'talking points,' no matter how fast you speak, you will be summarily cut off and never appear on this program again!" Perhaps these "experts" would refuse to appear on our "gutsy" host's program. At least that would spare us from having our intelligence insulted further.
John Whittum: Ad sensational
Doesn't the Steamboat Pilot & Today have some responsibility to verify the content of the ads it publishes? The Colorado Oil and Gas Association's (COGA) full-page ad of June 25 ("Certain species are covered. People are not.") insinuates that the entire oil and gas industry could be shut down for three months at a time because of prairie dog protection, that 10,000 jobs will be lost, that the new regulations will push the industry elsewhere, and that the 2,000 locals who recently protested the regulations in Grand Junction will be filling the unemployment lines. What a blitz of misinformation.

As an outsider, within the first few hours of being here, I got an uncomfortable sense of unbridled growth without regard for historical conservation or community preservation.

Art in the Park was always about the most fun weekend of the summer.
