Keep on racing

Stacked CMC Alpine ski team starts season with high hopes

Jaymes Elkins toyed around with the NASTAR gates every time his local ski club made a trip up to the Pocono Mountains from his native Hightstown, N.J. But he never really took ski racing all that seriously. Certainly not seriously enough to think he'd some day wind up on a collegiate Alpine ski racing team with a shot at a national title.

Paul Epley, Ph.D.: Poverty's pimps

Arvin Fluharty, Ph.D., a pioneer biochemist in Thin Layer Chromatography and Atomic Absorption Spectraphotometry, shocked an auditorium of researchers at a gathering in1969 (and was almost booed off of the stage), by espousing his fear that "We might never cure cancer for the simple reason that we now have more people living off of it than dying from it!" Dr. Fluharty predicted that the major "breakthroughs" in bringing cancer-curing drugs to market would be made through the efforts of for-profit American drug companies that recouped their research expenses by selling the cancer-curing doses as opposed to living off of government grants. In other words, he dared to suggest the all too obvious conflict of interest in a circumstance where success puts you out of business. Have you ever noticed that the first goal of an "Ad Hoc" committee is to find a way to guarantee its perpetuity? Particularly if they hold their meetings at a swank restaurant or the Broadmoor Hotel at someone else's expense.

Ken Brenner: Balanced plan best for Roan

There has been considerable debate about whether to allow natural gas drilling on BLM-administered public lands on the Roan Plateau near Rifle and if so what should be done with the revenues. As a likely candidate for Sensate District 8, I wanted to make my position known. I favor a balanced approach to developing the natural gas reserves under the Roan Plateau with a no surface disturbance stipulation for the remaining public lands. This position best balances the benefits of energy production with conservation of a special wildlife and recreation habitat. Any revenues from energy development must flow to the affected communities first to address the direct impacts of extraction and other consequences of the energy boom.

Board of Education: Student success

It is with great honor that we share some of the latest news from our district. Based on our CSAP scores, the Colorado Department of Education has ranked Steamboat Springs RE-2 as the 4th highest performing school district in the state. This has occurred while maintaining a favorable financial position. Our recent audit confirms that we are operating well within the boundaries of sound fiscal protocols. For more detailed information about our district's performance, please look for our Annual Report that will be arriving in your mail later this month or visit our website, www.sssd.k12.co.us. The combined efforts of many individuals are having a significant impact on the education of our community's young people.

Marie Matta: Cheap shots

I usually do not read Ann Coulter's column because her mean-spiritedness and superficial views just make me angry. However, I made an exception. The heading of her column and the first paragraph about the passing of her father caught my attention, and I thought she would reveal a gentler side of herself. How naive of me! Much to my disappointment, she still managed to politicize her memories of him and take cheap shots at individuals and organizations on the other side of her political fence. Clearly, her dad was a good man, and my condolences to her on her loss, but I feel equally sorry for her that she was unable even to write a tribute to her father without injecting her poisonous political platitudes.
