Joanne Palmer: 'Grouch Potato'

Welcome to Steamboat Springs, home of the newest reality TV show, "Grouch Potato." In this first episode, we will meet and interview several contestants to determine their grouch factor index. The grouch factor index is calculated using a complicated mathematical formula - kind of like the one used for the caucus - where factors such as amount of snow shoveled since Dec. 1 are multiplied by the number of days spent on the couch instead of at work. Other criteria are: relationships with friends and family (have you called your mother lately?) and number of ski days vs. number of sick days. Bonus points are available for the contents of the contestant's refrigerator. Fast food, fried food and junk food can catapult a contestant to the winner's circle. Subtractions will be made for leafy greens, organic food and soy-based products. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Sun City, Ariz.

Monica Hutson: Hometown feel

Our family attended the 95th Winter Carnival, an event my husband saw as a child and wanted to bring our son to. We had a wonderful time!

Marie Matta: A just solution

As a citizen of Lebanon, and therefore with a personal stake in the future of the Middle East, it was with disbelief that I read Jack and Lynny Huston's letter (Feb. 6, 2008) outlining their provocative view of a proposed peace in Israel.

Christine McKelvie: Exception to statement

Although I enjoyed John Russell's article about Moose Barrows in Sunday's Pilot, the feminist and historian in me takes exception to the following misstatement: "He still recalls that he was at the top of Howelsen Hill's large hill when he learned that Jimmy Heuga and Billy Kidd had won American's (sic) first medals at the 1964 Olympic Games."

Jake Schwan: What's it all about

On Saturday, Jan. 26, the front page of this paper had a picture of 16 head of elk. The caption read "Thieving Elk."

Our View: Kill Taylor's hunting bill

State Sen. Jack Taylor says his Senate Bill 69 is needed to rein in intimidating and overzealous Division of Wildlife officers. But the bill, as currently written, does little more than protect hunters who break the law.
