Steamboat Springs — Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle who fled the scene of a one-car rollover accident Sunday morning in the Routt National Forest.

The vehicle's passenger died in the wreck, Routt County Sheriff's Office Investigator Ken Klinger said.

Klinger said the driver left the accident scene on foot and is being sought as a person of interest.

"There is a possible charge of vehicular homicide, along with a list of other possible charges," Klinger said.

Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliott said the passenger in the Jeep Grand Cherokee died when the vehicle rolled down a 100-foot embankment off Forest Service Road 900. Routt County Road 7 becomes Forest Service Road 900 once the road enters the national forest.

Klinger said the deceased was not wearing his seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. The Jeep subsequently rolled on top of him, pinning him to the ground. The man's identity is being withheld until his family can be notified.

"The deceased we believe was Peruvian, but he had a Mexican drivers license," said Klinger, who said the victim was a sheepherder in the national forest. "The other party was not a Latino and left the scene."

Elliott said the Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.

Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg said and he would not give a preliminary cause of death. An autopsy is being conducted by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.
