Looking back: Homewood hosts ski jumping meet

The 14 head of long yearling steers brought to Steamboat last Thursday for shipments to Denver were indications of what the younger generation of Routt County can produce. The calves belonged to members of the 4-H Clubs, which are operating under the direction of County Agent Floyd Moon. The six heaviest steers averaged 1060 pounds each. A. Seymour judged the group to select a ring of five to represent the Routt County clubs at the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

Girls unable to set streak

Steamboat falls to Battle Mountain in bid for second win

Pipe dreams

Front Range thirsty for Yampa water

Carl Brouwer knows it could have gone worse. Brouwer, an engineer for the Front Range's Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, recently traveled to Glenwood Springs to meet with officials monitoring the Colorado River. Brouwer's job was to present details of a proposed trans-mountain diversion that would pump Yampa River water, part of the Colorado River system, across the Continental Divide to a lake near Denver International Airport. In some circles, people will tell you coming to the Western Slope and asking for water is like walking into a bar and asking for a brawl. Sayings such as "whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting" linger on this side of the Rockies.

A family foundation

Swanson history steeped in hardware

The Swansons have been in the hardware business for 60 years, but there are some things that will never change. "The presentation is different, we have more variety than we used to have, there is more competition, but other than that, it's about helping people get what they need so they can fix something," said Dennis Swanson, who stands six feet, seven inches tall, which makes it easy for him to spot customers who look like they need help at his Ace at the Curve hardware store in Steamboat Springs.

Kerry Hart: Battling the community college inferiority complex

Someone recently commented to me that a community college education is inferior to an education at a four-year college or university. Of course we know this is a myth. But apparently, the stigma still is out there.

John Whittum: Council on right track

Last Tuesday, City Council held a work session to discuss an ordinance to protect our watersheds. This item had originally been on Council's agenda earlier in the month but was tabled indefinitely. Many of us were surprised to see it appear on the agenda without much (if any) notice. The hasty introduction of the ordinance antagonized a number of people in the agricultural community, and so Council quickly realized its mistake and tabled the ordinance to allow more time for the community to examine the subject.

William S. Schurman: Unworthy of praise

Shame on the Pilot & Today for printing a front page article praising Jim Cook (who was not well received as the newsmaker of the year) and by choosing not to run the story about the renovation of the Squire building by the Hogue family on the front page. They have truly benefited the community by restoring their building to its original beauty.

David R. Freseman: Energy assistance

During this time of year, many in our community struggle to keep up with their home energy bills. While some of us don't think twice about living in a warm, comfortable home, others must seriously weigh such choices as keeping the heat on or doing without food or medical care.

Our View: Slowing troubled waters

The Steamboat Springs City Council was right to slow down movement on a proposed watershed ordinance. There are a lot of questions that must be answered before such regulations can be justified.

Jimmy Westlake: Meet the Seven Sisters

High overhead as darkness falls on cold January evenings is a tiny cluster of stars that often is mistaken for the Little Dipper. Although it does have a dipper shape to it, with a tiny little bowl and tiny little handle, its real name is the Pleiades, and it is popularly known as the Seven Sisters. A person with average vision should be able to see six stars in the cluster with no difficulty and a bit of careful searching should reveal the seventh faint star as well. A person with exceptional vision might make out as many as 8, 9, or even 10 stars with their unaided eye. How many can you see?
