Celebrate the end of holiday parties ... with a party
January marks the end of holiday season. The seemingly endless number of Christmas parties are over, and Steamboat locals slip back into their (more) normal routines. But that doesn't mean the fun needs to stop. January through April is a great time to throw parties in Steamboat. Whether it's an intimate dinner for friends while the snow is falling outside or a Super Bowl bash, start planning early to set your party apart from the others.
Cooking with Chef Ryan Hoth

Protect your eyes and hair this winter
Skin isn't the only vulnerable part of the body when exposed to ultraviolet rays. Your eyes also can be damaged by the sun's rays. Dr. Mark Helm, an ophthalmologist, and Dr. Gary Migues, an optometrist, say sunglasses and goggles are essential while on the ski mountain or during other outdoor activities during winter.

Ask a lawyer
Do I need a living will?
So, those new skis or snowboard have you actually considering a run down Chute 3 or a hike into the Christmas Tree Bowl for some steep and deep? And why not ... you've always wanted to ski a double-black diamond. But before you head to the gondola, you might want to consider a living will (especially if you won't be wearing a helmet).

Web sites worth a whirl
It wasn't more than five years ago that satellite imagery seemed to be a tool solely of government surveillance and military intelligence. Colorado-based companies like Space Imaging and DigitalGlobe led the way, securing contracts with private companies, the U.S. Defense Department and foreign governments to provide amazingly detailed overhead imagery of just about any corner of the earth.

Sports broadcaster Verne Lundquist
Q&A
National sports broadcasting icon Verne Lundquist has called Steamboat Springs home - at least when he's not on the road - for the past 22 years. Lundquist has seen and covered just about every major sporting event in his illustrious career, including the Masters golf tournament, the Winter Olympics and the NCAA men's basketball tournament. Lundquist currently is the voice of college football for the CBS network. Despite his constant travel, Lundquist and his wife, Nancy, stay actively involved in Steamboat Springs, particularly with Routt County United Way and Strings in the Mountains.
Through metal veins
Local artisan hammers out niche in booming housing market
Many of Steamboat's mountain homes are noteworthy for massive wooden beams, sensitive architecture and grand views of the Rockies. But often it's the attention to detail that sets a home apart. Singular design elements like a Pete Schroeder chandelier - custom crafted in steel with antique flair and a rich patina of rust - can appeal to the senses the most.
Mechanical problem shuts down Storm Peak lift
A mechanical failure shut down Steamboat Ski Area's Storm Peak Express lift just after 9:30 this morning, stranding about 70 skiers and snowboarders on the lift for more than two hours as Ski Patrol crews lowered people to the ground with ropes, harnesses and small metal seats. No injuries, except for cold toes, were reported as a result of the shutdown. It was like rappelling," Maryland resident Neil Brodsky, 54, said of being lowered to the ground by Ski Patrol. "Once I was in the seat and had the rope over me, I was pretty comfortable."
Full courses and Lighter Fare
It's no secret that Steamboat Springs is Ski Town USA. The dozens of Winter Olympians who have called Steamboat home over the decades indeed justify the moniker. But Routt County is home to many outstanding young men and women who make names for themselves in areas other than - or in addition to - winter sports. Unfortunately, many of them often go unrecognized.

I loved Dante Terrell Smith, aka Mos Def, in "The Italian Job," "16 Blocks" and "Talladega Nights." He's appearing in five more movies over the next two years, so it's understandable why the hip hop artist's new CD was released with no packaging other than the CD itself and a clear plastic case.

Tattoo of the week: Jeff Henderson
When my husband and I went to get my wedding band in Northern Virginia in 2000, the jewelry clerk asked him why he wasn't getting one himself. My husband told her that he doesn't wear jewelry of any kind. The clerk then proceeded to say with that being the case, he should get a ring tattooed on his finger. I was starting to laugh, (yeah, like he would really do that) and he got this look and said, "I think that's a good idea."
