Sound Off for Nov. 19
If it's true that Steamboat Springs has become too politically liberal, then it's about time.
Denise Connelly: School thanks
I would like to thank the community for its strong support of our students and schools in the recent passage of 3C and 3D. Through their generous support we will be able to continue the quality education that we have enjoyed in the past. The new and improved elementary buildings and competitive salaries will enable us to meet the needs of the future and compete for quality personnel.
Ulrich Salzgeber: Saluting servants
Now that the elections are over (thank goodness) and all the new officials are learning about and trying to adapt to their new positions, it is important to pay tribute to those who are leaving office. There are two in particular that I have had the privilege of working with. Both are honest, hard working individuals who have dedicated much of their lives to bettering Routt County.
Mark O'Reilly: Support hockey
While everyone is entitled to their opinion, the comment in "Readers Sound Off" concerning youth hockey coverage merits a response. First, the same comment could be made about newspaper coverage of any youth sport at any level from the little guys through high school. Second, there's a lot more at stake than "attention for the kids by getting their names in the paper".
Mike Luppes: 'Secret' misleads
I am writing with concerns about the stance taken by the editorial staff of the Steamboat Pilot & Today and the Hayden Valley Press regarding the "renaming" of executive sessions at official public meetings to "secret" sessions. My concerns (and those of the Hayden School District Board of Education) are based upon the following:
County should tell city, 'no'
City Council President Ken Brenner has asked Routt County to fund 30 to 40 percent of the cost of the new Steamboat Springs Community Center.
No resident left behind
Community members work to make Thanksgiving a special holiday for everyone in town
For many, Thanksgiving Day is a time to gather with family and friends, watch football in the comfort of a warm, safe home and eat until it hurts.
The mountain waits
No news on potential sale as ski area prepares for Scholarship Day
With the ski season just days away, the Steamboat Ski Area remains the property of American Skiing Company.
Global drivers to pilot city buses
Damion Graham is ready for the occasional red light on Lincoln Avenue.
Baily and Kashiwa tapped for Hall of Fame
Steamboat tennis player, skier join likes of John Elway and Jack Dempsey
Steamboat's Carol Baily and Hank Kashiwa have been selected for the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.
End of the line for Sailors
Turnovers prove costly for Steamboat in loss to Pueblo County
Handshakes would have seemed out of place. Instead, Steamboat Springs head coach Aaron Finch stood just inside the locker room after Saturday's 41-7 loss to Pueblo County in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs and gave every passing player a hug.
Luke Graham: Covering the family
Sometimes I can't believe I get paid to do what I do.
John F. Russell: Bleeding blue and orange
I've always been a Denver Broncos fan. Like so many other residents of Colorado, it was never really a choice, but more like a rite of birth.
Giving thanks

Keep the Steamboat Ski Area local
Starting the Wednesday of Thanksgiving week, the Steamboat Ski Area will open for skiing and riding and all other snow events. Many of us that live in Steamboat or who visit Steamboat, love the mountain. My teen style topic this week was to ask around at school to find out who people think should own the ski area if they had the choice. I set off around Steamboat Springs High School expecting someone to say "MTV, so we could have concerts," or "Disneyland, so Mickey Mouse could come," or "Six Flags, so there could be roller coasters," or "National Aeronautics and Space Administration, so we could be air lifted instead of taking the gondola." However, I was surprised to find that some of my peers thought logically about my question. In fact, when I asked this question I got all of the same answers.
Joanne Palmer: The lessons I've learned from my big brother
Life in the 'Boat
My brother, Mark, can't tell the difference between a penny and a quarter. He'll never drive a car, read a bestseller, go to college or get married. At 54, he has the reading ability of a third grader, the writing skills of a seven-year-old and knows almost no math.
The best CD ever
KT Tunstall's debut album "Eye to the Telescope" stands out to me as both the best and most unique CD I have ever listened to. And coming from a senior in high school with several cases of CD's and a full MP3 player, that is saying something.
Sarah Hagenbugh: Plant a tree for conservation and beauty
Community Agriculture Alliance
As we complete our fall chores and get ready for that first big snowfall, it's hard to think about spring tree planting. But believe it or not, it's that time again.
Skiing vs. snowboarding
What your ride says about you
Do you ski? Do you snowboard? Or do you both ski and snowboard? Or do you do nothing?
Jimmy Westlake: Algol, the Demon Star
Celestial news
Ancient sky watchers believed that the stars were eternal and non-changing, but modern astronomers have discovered otherwise. Although it is true that most changes that occur in the stars are so slow that you wouldn't notice a difference during your lifetime, a few stars are noticeably non-constant to the unaided eye.
Bill May: George Porter
Tales from the Ranch
In my column, the only time I've mentioned any of the hired hands at the S-Bar-S was a line concerning the Moffat boys working for Dad. During the 88-year history of our operation, there have been a lot of different hands, some whom make for very interesting stories.
