Sound off: July 16

I wish the stories about the Rainbow Family in the Pilot & Today did not whitewash some of the realities about these people. Yes, there are many very nice, responsible members of this group, and the majority is probably pretty OK, but has anyone from the newspaper bothered to ask the hotel and restaurant workers about their experiences with Rainbow members? The trash they were supposed to take out of their camp ended up in the hotels and who knows where else. Do you know how many times they stiffed restaurants during this past week?

Jeff Batt: The land will heal

I was watching the 6 p.m. news last night (KUSA Channel 9, Denver), and saw the video of the before and after pictures of the recent Rainbow Gathering near Steamboat Springs. I find it very interesting that the U.S. Forest Service deems it necessary to point out the damage done by the peaceful gathering of 10,000 to 15,000 people on this land. The land will heal as the gathering was a congregation of God's children to promote peace and unity among ourselves -- all were welcome.

Janice Poirot: Not newsworthy

Let's print a news story about how a victim of an assault was really dirty, and how property, damaged during the assault, smelled. That's what the Pilot did in the July 11 article, "Rainbow rental returns wrecked" wherein a customer, "filthy with dreadlocks," rented a car from Steamboat Motors and was later assaulted. The customer was so beaten, "all his front teeth" were loose; the rental car so damaged, it was totaled. Sounds like crime to me.
