Crossing the bridge into his own

When Drew Emmitt first stepped onto the stage as a solo artist, he wanted his sound to be different from the funky, jam-rock sound of Leftover Salmon, his longtime band.

The Drew Emmitt Band started touring as a traditional bluegrass band, attracting the attention of the fiddle/mandolin acoustic crowd.

But now that Emmitt has pushed off deep into the lap lane of his own career, people no longer automatically associate the Drew Emmitt Band with Leftover Salmon.

After the summer CD release of "Across the Bridge," Emmitt finally has come into his own. To celebrate his new freedom from the Salmon umbilical cord, Emmitt is plugging in.

"We now have an electric guitar and mandolin," Emmitt said. "I'm exploring more of my rock side. We're getting louder, and it's like coming full circle from Salmon."

With his volume turned up, Emmitt is joined on stage by Jeff Sipe on drums, Tyler Grant on guitar and Greg Garrison on bass.

"We're getting closer to the Salmon sound than I was when I first came out (solo), but you could say this is more my side of Salmon," Emmitt said.
