— Downtown Lincoln Avenue will be restricted to two-lane traffic next week as it gets repaved.

The Colorado Department of Transportation anticipates the restriction on Lincoln Avenue, between Third and 13th streets, to be during business hours Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week, Senior Highway Supervisor Les Anderson said.

Parking spaces will be blocked off beginning at 5 a.m., but CDOT hopes to allow people to park immediately after it repaves the spaces, Anderson said.

Ruts in each lane of the road created the need to repave, Anderson said.

"Traffic just beats it down," Anderson said. "(The road) has deteriorated over the years."

CDOT will not rip up the old road surface, but rather overlay a 1-inch layer of asphalt to cover and smooth the ruts.

The overlay should allow four years of traffic until it is time to remove the asphalt and start over, Anderson said.

Crews will restripe the lanes and crosswalks the week after the paving work is complete.

The city of Steamboat Springs has been doing some preliminary work this week by preparing sections of the road that deteriorate faster than others, Public Works Director Jim Weber said.

The city will assist with traffic control and possible detours, but single-lane restrictions should be sufficient, Anderson said.

"We want to be convenient for the town," Anderson said. "Hopefully, if everything goes well, the first day should be an all-day project and Wednesday and Thursday will be half days with minimal impact to traffic."
