Three days after the Democratic National Convention ended in Boston, response to the event by Steamboat Springs' residents appears evenly divided. Many of those predisposed toward John Kerry remained so, and many leaning toward President Bush stayed with Bush. The convention did seem to further strengthen the feelings of Kerry supporters, however, and several Republicans tipped their hats at the energy and effectiveness of the Democrats' speeches.

Town and county So let me get this straight. Candidates for county commissioner told Hayden residents this week that the city should not dictate where the justice center goes. So does that mean that Hayden residents and the town of Hayden should have no say in where the county locates a new County Fairgrounds building or any other county-owned facility? I don't think so. And I don't think Hayden residents would take too kindly to Steamboat residents, or any other county residents, telling them where that county facility ought to go in Hayden.

Bessie H. Rowley (1910-2004)

Former Hayden resident Bessie H. Rowley passed away July 28, 2004, at Mantey Heights Rehab and Care Center in Grand Junction. She was 94.

Bennie M. Rule (1933-2004)

Former Steamboat Springs resident and longtime Alaskan Ben Rule died peacefully at his home on July 25, 2004. Rule, 70, was surrounded by his wife, children and a brother at the time of his death.
