The Steamboat Pilot & Today

Steamboat Springs — When The Pirate Theatre published the Steamboat Pirate & Yesterday to foreshadow upcoming scenes from "Community Use Theatre" for the first time last September, Doug Lockwood and Brian Harvey weren't sure of my reaction to their spoof on me Kelva Silly. They obviously didn't know me that well.

Like my reaction to most things, I took it in stride and actually laughed (whether at myself or their impression of me, I'm not sure).

But after the recent publication they feared my reaction a little more after my run-in with the law a couple of weeks ago. Kelva Silly 5 pints later actually measures various town events with full or half-full pint glasses. Seth Bograd, you look fabulous, by the way, in that blonde wig!

After seeing my name in the police blotter weeks ago, Harvey and Lockwood were stupefied at their silly portrayal of me, but I still continue to laugh at their humor and support their strides. A very wise man once told me once not to sweat the small stuff (I'm sure he read the book), and that is exactly how I must look at small-town antics such as this.

I've had a chance to look at this town like so many others, or how so many others will one day, and I've realized one thing it is very small. And although I love to walk down the street in my town and not worry about getting mugged or how horrible I would feel to see a begging blind man, much of what occurs in this town would not fly in a bigger city. And in almost every aspect, I know you'll understand what I'm saying.

Harvey and Lockwood sometimes stand on the ledge and dangle dignity and embarrassment over the side, but they'll never fall or let you fall. They deserve respect for taking things for what they are and allowing people to laugh at them. Serious issues become lighter, non-life-threatening situations my new outlook on life.

If I've learned one other thing about this town it's that some people continue to surprise me and that prepares me for a lifetime of even more surprises.

Thank you, Steamboat, for never letting me feel embarrassed or judged. Thank you for welcoming me to this community with open arms after so much turnover in my position. I know the man who replaces me will put his heart and soul into making 4-Points even greater than I have.
