YVEA customers could see rate hike

About $5 per month increase for average use possible beginning in January

Starting in 2010, all Yampa Valley Electric Association customers could see an increase of as much as 7 percent on monthly bills because of an increase in wholesale prices from Xcel Energy. For residential customers, that comes to an average increase of $5.04 per month.

Original meet postponed because of early-season snowstorm on Front Range

Steamboat Springs High School cross-country team members head to Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday for their state meet. The meet originally was scheduled for last weekend, but it was postponed when the Front Range was pounded by an early-season snowstorm.

Technically, the Class 3A football playoffs start in a week. But as far as the Western Slope League goes, the playoffs might as well start at 7 p.m. today in Glenwood Springs when the Demons welcome the Sailors. The winner will earn the league championship and a better playoff spot.

Cog Road project delayed

Contractor waiting for steel; new completion date is Dec. 31

The Cog Road slide repair project near Hayden has been delayed until mid-November. Heather McLaughlin, senior engineer for the Routt County Road and Bridge Department, said the contractor was waiting for steel from the manufacturer to begin the project.

12:07 a.m. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a report of a disturbance in the 400 block of Fifth Street where a person reportedly broke bail bond conditions. Police arrested a 37-year-old Steamboat Springs woman on suspicion of violation of a restraining order and harassment.

Steamboat briefs: Coats can be dropped off in Oak Creek for drive

The Parish of St. Martin’s in Oak Creek is holding its St. Martin of Tours Winter Coat Drive. Coats, hats and gloves can be dropped off at a collection bin inside the Oak Creek Liquor Store during business hours or at Holy Name Catholic Church in Steamboat. Coats will be distributed to those in need after noon Mass on Sunday at St. Martin of Tours.

Craig resident reworks climbing wall, hopes to offer lessons

Rob Byrnes’ first time climbing was the most memorable. He was 12 years old and staring up at a wall of floor tiles that were stacked horizontally with spaces in between. The only instruction he was given was how to tie the knots on his rock climbing harness.
